Before you hand over money for a used vehicle, spend a fraction of it on an independent opinion. We put the vehicle on the lift and go through it as if it were about to be ours: engine and transmission condition, leaks, cooling system, brakes, tires, suspension and steering, exhaust, electrical, stored trouble codes, and evidence of previous collision or flood damage.

You get a straight rundown of what is good, what will need money soon, and what would make us walk away. That report is also a negotiating tool — knowing a vehicle needs tires and a set of struts is worth far more than the cost of the inspection.

Pre-trip inspections follow the same approach before a long drive: fluids, belts and hoses, battery and charging system, brakes, tires including the spare, lights, wipers and climate system, so a family road trip out of Kansas City does not turn into a tow bill in another state.
